The History Behind Functional Mushrooms

For centuries, healthy mushrooms have been used for their benefits. From the Egyptians to the Aztecs and all throughout the Eastern world, functional mushrooms have been used to improve and treat many health concerns.

One of the earliest documented discoveries of mushrooms used for wellness came to light in 1991 when a frozen, mummified man was found in the Italian Alps on a border between Austria and Italy. He was named Ötzi and was said to have lived around 3300 BCE. Ötzi was a traveler and was found to be carrying two types of functional mushrooms. One was amadou mushroom (Fomes fomentarius) and the other was birch polypore (Fomitopsis betulina). Amadou mushrooms (also called tinder fungus) were likely used to start fires, while birch polypore are healthy mushrooms known to support overall health and
wellbeing.
